Southern England in the 19th century: John Durbeyfield (John Collin) learns that he is related to the rich d'Urbervilles. The impoverished man sends his daughter Tess (Nastassja Kinski) to the family so that she can have a better life. She is hired - and raped by Alec d'Urberville (Leigh Lawson) after a dance evening. After regularly sleeping with her tormentor, she is expecting a child from him. Tess decides to flee back to her family. The child dies and Tess then works as a maid. Her relationship with the pastor's son Angel (Peter Firth) does not have a happy ending either. He pushes her away when he finds out about her past...
