Wilhelm Meister (Rüdiger Vogler) really wants to become a writer, but his mother (Marianne Hoppe) tells him every day that he is far too inexperienced for that. He lacks experiences, experiences and acquaintances that he could process in his writings. So Meister sets off and travels from Glückstadt to Bonn. When he changes trains in Hamburg, he meets the beautiful Therese Farner (Hanna Schygulla), who he also leaves an impression on and receives her telephone number. They later meet again in Bonn, where she joins Wilhelm's now three-person tour group. When they meet the Austrian poet Bernhard Landau (Peter Kern) and he invites them to an acquaintance's property, the journey begins to get really interesting. Because despite the shared experiences, no one wants to open up to the other, so everyone essentially remains strangers to each other...
