There are good films. There are very good films. And then there are films that people say: You just have to see them! Films that were not only box-office hits and scooped up a whole host of prizes, but were also still featured in various leaderboards years or even decades later. JFK by master director Oliver Stone also falls into that category. The assassination of John F. Kennedy is one of the most famous unsolved crimes of the 20th century and has always fueled a wide variety of conspiracy theories. Was it really Lee Harvey Oswald or someone else? And if so, did he have accomplices? Three-time Oscar winner Stone (for "Platoon", "Midnight Express" and "Born on July 4th") chose a unique approach to approaching the mystery surrounding the historic assassination - and turned the incredibly exciting and complex criminal case into suspense cinema like it doesn't get any better. Available now on Disney+: You can expect a cleverly told, variedly staged and highly entertaining thriller with a star ensemble that is rarely seen. Our critic Ulrich Behrens attested to the film, which is also known in Germany as "John F. Kennedy - Tatort Dallas", that it could be "exhausting" - which in the end, however, did not affect the quality of the film. Or if so, then positive. In the end, it got the full 5 stars in the FILMSTARTS review and also a place among the 25 best films of the 1990s: For the film, which was cast with stars like Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon, Joe Pesci, Vincent D'Onofrio, Tommy Lee Jones, Sissy Spacek, Kevin Bacon and Michael Rooker, it not only earned eight Oscar nominations, which were well deserved and over $200 million at the international box office. The film is still considered a "unique document in film history", as Behrens "JFK" describes, among other things. In the case of "JFK", Stone, known for the wild staging cocktail "Natural Born Killers", not only challenges his audience with a "strip paved with dialogue" but also relies on different film formats and radical cuts and a mix of documentary footage and re-enactments. The result is a crime-fighting cinematic masterpiece that pulls you in from the first to the last minute and invites you to puzzle along - and fittingly, of all things, finds the perfect conclusion with an invented closing speech. By the way, for anyone who can't get enough of one of the most notorious criminal cases in American history and the conspiracy theories surrounding it, there's even more "JFK". On the one hand, in addition to the theatrical version, which is already over three hours long, Stone's film also has a director's cut that is a good 17 minutes longer, which we consider to be one of the best director's cuts of all time (and is available on Blu-ray*, among other things). On the other hand, in 2021 there was also the documentary "JFK Revisited - The Truth About the Murder of John F. Kennedy" - also staged by Oliver Stone, who, together with forensic scientists, physicians, historians and contemporary witnesses, united Look at new evidence and statements surrounding the assassination. *This Disney+ link is an affiliate link.
