Karl Urban is set to take on the role of Johnny Cage in upcoming video game adaptation Mortal Kombat 2. The US industry magazine The Wrap reports that the star, known from the Amazon Prime Video hit "The Boys" and blockbuster film series such as "Star Trek", "The Lord of the Rings" and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has recently trains of the relevant negotiations. And usually such negotiations about a role come to a satisfactory conclusion for all parties. Johnny Cage is a Hollywood star and martial arts fighter in the "Mortal Kombat" games and is known for his laid-back and somewhat nerve-wracking manner, which here and there also crosses the line into pure comedy. The main inspiration for the character is action icon Jean-Claude van Damme at the height of his career in the 80's and 90's and he is mostly portrayed in the video games as a classic Hollywood leading man à la Tom Cruise. In the final scene of 2021's Mortal Kombat, an appearance by Johnny Cage was hinted at with a movie-within-a-movie poster, so it looks like the movie adaptation will follow that portrayal of the character as well. The fact that Cage is played by 50-year-old Karl Urban should mean that the character in "Mortal Kombat 2" is a bit older - maybe so that the daughter Cassie Cage, known from the video games, can also get an appearance? Either way, Urban seems like a good choice for the role, although he's not exactly known for his martial arts skills. Even for a brawling game adaptation like "Mortal Kombat 2", this is not necessarily the most important thing, as the nominal leading actor Lewis Tan showed in "Mortal Kombat": Tan undoubtedly has the fighting talent for the role, but found it difficult to master the to wear the whole movie. It is more important that the actors are convincing in their roles. And in "The Boys", "Dredd" and Co., he has already proved that Urban can play damn cool, robust guys. Mortal Kombat 2 is written by writer Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight, The Umbrella Academy) and, like Part 1, directed by Simon McQuoid. In addition to the aforementioned Lewis Tan as Cole Young, who heads to Hollywood to recruit Johnny Cage in the final scene of Mortal Kombat, numerous other characters from the first film are also set to return, including Jessica McNamee as the Sonya Blade and Mehcad Brooks as Jax. And the fan favorites Scorpion and Sub-Zero will probably not be missing either. Mortal Kombat 2 does not currently have a release date. Now that the casting has started, filming should start soon. This means that publication in the course of 2024 is very feasible.
