The scene of the series, which is based on the Coen brothers' film of the same name, is the border area between the US states of North and South Dakota and Minnesota, where all sorts of criminal gangs are up to mischief and the police, who are often overwhelmed, are trying desperately to find justice in all the bloody chaos and to ensure order. In the individual seasons, independent, self-contained stories are told in different decades, which are only very loosely connected. Set in 2006, the first season stars cops Molly Solverson (Allison Tolman) and Gus Grimly (Colin Hanks) as they investigate a series of murders involving the mysterious Lorne Malvo (Billy Bob Thornton) and insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman) are involved. Season 2 shows us how Molly's father Lou (Patrick Wilson) faces a crime family almost 30 years ago. Season 3 is all about the rivalry between the twin brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy (both Ewan McGregor) in 2010, which is accompanied by all sorts of criminal activities. And season 4 takes you back to the year 1950, where the feud between two gangster families threatens to escalate.
